Seminar Topics

Choose from the following menu. Please keep in mind to schedule at least one 10 min break per day plus one hour off for lunch. Each day will begin at 9:00 and conclude between 4:30 and 5:00pm. Each topic’s allotted time includes working set(s). All seminars are presented by Marie Sawford

  1. Competition Puppy – Fun introduction to building drive and enthusiasm for heeling, fronts, finishes, recalls, building toy drive, learning how to engage your puppy (and them you!), target training, kick back stands, back drops, retrieving, jumping, signals/verbal position changes and go-outs. Time allotted: 2.5 hours (if doing heeling and handling/Novice this can be broken down to 1 hour)

  2. Games For Obedience – Enhance focus, attitude and precision by using many different games. These games cover all levels of obedience. Time allotted 1.5 hours

  3. Heeling and Handling – Introduction to a comprehensive handling system for heeling and figure eights. Get attitude, precision and learn to enjoy heeling. Each element of heeling is broken down into smaller skills and value is built to each skills. Also covered in this section is off lead heeling and teaching the dog to use his body during heeling. Time allotted 3.5 hours

  4. Individual Problem Solving – Get to the root of your dog’s problem to strengthen his understanding of what is expected of him and improve his consistency. Questions from the rest of the group are encouraged. Time allotted 10 minutes per person with a working spot.

  5. Proofing and Distractions – An explanation of each topic and their proper and productive use in training. Time allotted General 1.5 hours More detailed Novice 30 mins. Open 1 hour Utility 1 hour

  6. Novice – How to teach and lay proper foundation for the Novice level, stand for exam recalls, fronts and finishes and stays *Must also include Heeling and Handling, the remaining Novice skills can covered in one hour. Time allotted 4.5 hrs

  7. Open – How to teach and lay proper foundation skills for the open level. Drop on recall, retrieves without the use of an ear pinch, high jump, broad jump, position changes and stays. Time allotted 2 hours

  8. Utility – How to teach a lay proper foundation skills for the utility level. Seek back, scent discrimination, moving stand, signals, go-outs and directed jumping. Time allotted 2 hours

  9. Train Your Brain – Improve trial preparation with mental training skills, positive thinking and visualization. Learn how to deal with ring nerves. *This is a big topic can be covered on a smaller scale in 2 hours but is usually done as a 4 hours separate workshop. Time allotted 2 hours or 4 hours

  10. Rally Obedience – Covering all levels of CKC rally (Novice, Advanced, Excellent and Master). Signs are grouped together based on the skills they have in common. Time allotted 1 day or 2 day would include review, course running and strategies for walk throughs and course running

 

For Example

Day One

  • Novice + Heeling & Handling: 9:00 – 2:30 (including lunch)
  • Proofing & Distractions: 2:30 – 3:30
  • Games: 3:30 – 5:00

Day Two

  • Competition Puppy: 9:00 – 10:00
  • Individual Problem Solving: 10:00 – 11:40 (10 working spots)
  • Open + Utility: 11:40 – 2:40 (including lunch)
  • Train Your Brain: 2:40 – 4:40
